Value /ˈvaljuː/
Values are the principles or standards of conduct that shape our lives and direct our assessment of what is significant. The definition of values in the dictionary is exact. Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on your values? What truly matters to you? Values serve as our North Star, guiding and forming our existence’s foundation. They have a profound impact on whom we choose to associate with. Our values are not a matter of choice but a product of our upbringing, influenced by our surroundings and individual convictions.
When it comes to defining a company’s values, how do you go about it? I have witnessed. companies try to establish their values and convey them to their employees artificially but fail to do so. Why does this happen? Because people have never truly understood how or why these values were established. Values should arise organically, rooted in the reasons behind the company’s creation and the values of its founders. These factors profoundly influence the spirit of the organization. When employees discover that the company’s values align with their own, they find purpose in their work. However, if there is a mismatch, they merely have a job that they will eventually leave, experiencing feelings of depression or burnout.
Interestingly, the word “value” also describes the characteristics of products and services. Warren Buffet once said, “Price is what you pay, value is what you get,” this holds true when it comes to understanding the actual worth of our investments, whether in terms of money or otherwise. Remember, value surpasses the price you pay. It encompasses the positive impact, personal growth, and meaningful connections you receive in return. Similarly, within a company, values extend beyond salary. They provide individuals with the affirmation that they are an asset to the organization. This is true only if they are treated in accordance with those values. If not, they will seek opportunities elsewhere.
Do you know your company’s values? Are they effectively communicated and upheld throughout the organization? Reflecting upon and embodying these values is essential for fostering a positive and fulfilling work environment We should aim to establish businesses where values are more than just slogans on a poster. Instead, they should be deeply rooted in the culture and embodied by each member of the organization.
