On the World Mental Health Day, it made me reflect upon the journey of self-awareness and mental resilience. One simple yet profound phrase, “Be Here Now,” has significantly transformed my life, offering lessons that extend far beyond the boardroom and into the realms of personal relationships and inner peace.
As an executive, my life was a whirlwind of deadlines, decisions, and responsibilities. I faced countless challenges, navigated through high-pressure situations, and strived to make a mark in the corporate world. Amidst all the chaos, I believed I had mastered the art of being present, especially when spending time with my loved ones at home. However, it was only when I stepped away from my executive role that I realized how far from reality this belief was.
Closing the chapter as a top executive marked the beginning of a profound and transformative journey within myself. It was a journey to the depths of my soul, a deep dive into the suppressed emotions and ignored aspects of my being that had been overshadowed by the adrenaline rush of my professional life. Everything that I had kept at bay, all the moments I had missed being truly present, came flooding out, demanding attention and reflection.
Being present in the moment is a concept that sounds simple but is deceptively challenging to practice. The continuous stream of thoughts, the mental chatter that accompanies us through our days, can create a barrier to truly connecting with the now. Disconnecting from this relentless flow and redirecting focus requires more than just a desire; it requires wrestling with deep-seated habits and conditioning that have been ingrained over decades.
I stand before you today, not as an expert, but as a fellow traveler on this journey towards presence. Recent experiences have only reinforced the belief that achieving a state of true presence is not just desirable but essential. It requires determination, effort, and a willingness to train and seek support. Despite the challenges, I am convinced that this goal is attainable and that the rewards are immeasurable.
What one uncovers along this journey is worth every bit of the effort put in. The ability to be truly present opens up a world of richness in experiences, deepens connections with loved ones, and fosters a sense of peace and contentment within. It is a journey of transformation that promises a life lived more fully, more aware, and more in tune with the moments that matter most.
I encourage you to take a moment of introspection. Ask yourself if you are truly able to be present in the moment, if you can genuinely say that you can “Be Here Now.” The journey towards presence is a transformative one, filled with challenges but also laden with profound rewards. It is a journey worth embarking upon, a journey towards a richer, fuller, and more connected life. Let us embrace the journey, nurture our mental health, and strive to live in the fullness of the present moment, each and every day.
